Information

The City will investigate security lights, flood lights and artificial lights from private properties that are creating a nuisance.

Local Government Act 1995

Under the Local Government Act 1995, Schedule 3, Division 1, the City may serve notice to a resident whereby they are not taking specific measures to prevent artificial or natural light being emitted or reflected from their property which consequently creates a 'nuisance'.

Security cameras

  • The installation and use of security/surveillance cameras is not regulated by local government, therefore the City of Canning has no legislation available to regulate their usage.
  • The Local Government Act 1995 does not provide local government with the power to create local laws regarding security cameras, this makes the issue a civil matter between neighbours.
  • If the resident believes that the camera is recording footage of neighbouring properties or the footage is being used for indecent purposes, the matter should be referred to the local Police on 13 14 44.

Issues with neighbours

  • People are sometimes unaware that their activities are causing a problem.
  • The City encourages all residents and business operators to talk to their neighbours about problems before making a complaint.
